Daisy gets Hyperphysical

Overview

This deck gives Daisy a solid combat option with Hyperphysical Shotcaster, coupled to Astral Mirror for extra hand slots to carry Tomes (handily replicating Daisy's Tote Bag and dampening the The Necronomicon). Astral Mirror clashes with the Backpack, so instead tutor cards (Mr. "Rook", Whitton Greene, No Stone Unturned) along with some card draw (Grim Memoir, Blood-Rite) get these key assets into play. Daisy is one of only two of the current crop of Seekers who can pack Ghastly Possession, which allows you to reload the Hyperphysical Shotcaster (and can also recharge Grim Memoir). With In the Thick of It, Daisy can be packing a Railshooter Shotcaster from game 1 coming off of her great 5.

Beyond that sweet gun, a crucial part of this deck is action economy. Aside from extra hand slots, Astral Mirror itself gives you an extra action to play items into those slots - allowing Daisy to get her Tomes or gun out more readily. Speaking of Tomes, Daisy's own free action can be used to boost a skill (Encyclopedia), to investigate (Grim Memoir) and even to heal (Medical Texts). Eon Chart rounds off action economy and also forms a secret-using core with a couple of the tomes and Mr. "Rook", which is replenished by Astounding Revelation, Enraptured and (should you feel the need on Memoir) Ghastly Possession.

While the deck packs some fairly usual resource generation cards, the Matterweaver upgrade on the Shotcaster also allows you to conjure new assets (any asset!) by testing your . This is extremely useful early in a scenario when you may be more resource-light, and also it makes getting Death • XIII into play late game less painful if you didn't draw it in your opening hand.

The last few mentions are Occult Lexicon, which provides some combat, resource generation and card draw in one package. For boosting , the combo of Whitton Greene and Death • XIII get you to an effective 7 (and you aren't lacking for or cards to commit anyway, plus you have Encyclopedia). In a nutshell this deck is shoot the bad guys and get free investigate actions, both coming off high - what's not to love?

Advanced Strategies

  • Daisy does action economy. With Grim Memoir and Eon Chart you can take 5 (maybe 6, there's debate on whether Eon Chart can be used twice for the same action...) investigate actions in a turn, or you can use Encyclopedia for 4 investigate actions at a +2 . Further, Astral Mirror also allows for amazing action economy for playing hand assets - no longer is it going to take turns upon turns to get your books out. As a result Astral Mirror is a great target for either No Stone Unturned or Mr. "Rook".

  • Daisy starts blasting. BAM, BAM! Hyperphysical Shotcaster with Railshooter makes it easy to kill off enemies, coming off a effective 7 with Whitton and Death • XIII in play (and with ample or cards to commit). The gun is tutor-able by Whitton, rechargeable with Ghastly Possession and is a good target for No Stone Unturned as well.

  • Greasy Encyclopedia. The Encylopedia is perfect deck grease. Need to evade an enemy rather than kill it for a quick Resign getaway? Take an attack of opportunity and come at that test with an effective +2 (using Eon Chart to get out of dodge even more quickly). Want to get several assets into to play on-the-cheap? Use it before activating Matterweaver on the Shotcaster. It's such a convenient catch-all it feels too good to be true!

What didn't make the cut

There's actually a lot to talk about here! As a general design point, my biggest challenge with this deck was realising that I shouldn't be trying to use Backpack and Astral Mirror on the same deck (as they both take the Body slot), and should instead move onto different tutor cards and No Stone Unturned. Once I made this change, it all clicked into place! Other noteworthy omissions below:

  • Archaic Glyphs - Guiding Stones. Archaic Glyphs, while a great card for clue compression, clashes with Astral Mirror and so doesn't make the cut. This deck boasts good action economy anyway so you don't notice its absence. Honestly, given it's such a staple of so many Seeker decks, it's nice to make a deck without it!

  • The Raven Quill. This card is basically built for Daisy, but I don't like it. The way I see it, is you really want the Supernatural Record upgrade to get the relevant Tome out of your deck - but the Quill requires 3 resources to play on top of whatever you're paying for the book. Interwoven Ink to ready other assets is also cool, but with Supernatural Record that's 7 XP for something that doesn't work very efficiently. And I know if you get it into play one upgrade box per game gets checked, but that still isn't enough.

  • Higher Education. Overall I didn't see this deck having loads of resources to spare as it is asset heavy, even with Matterweaver on the Shotcaster helping with this, and Encyclopedia will often give you a +2 boost too. If you want it in (and are playing taboos), you can use Eon Chart • instead.

  • Dr. Milan Christopher. Everyone's favorite resource generator! Overall Whitton Greene has more soak and allows for tutoring, and I thought the resource balance was right, so he didn't make the cut. The deck would need rebalancing away from several copies of Astounding Revelation if Whitton is taken out, I think.

  • Eldritch Sophist. There's loads of cards with secrets on them, so why isn't he in the deck?! Well it's another asset to get into play, I would need Charisma if I wanted it in play alongside Whitton Greene which is therefore more XP. Overall I think the secret-bearing assets here have enough juice to last one game, and so the Sophist is just another layer of abstraction.

  • Research Librarian. While this is a Tome deck, the most important asset is arguably the Hyperphysical Shotcaster. Given this, I prefer Mr. "Rook" as fatter soak and general purpose tutoring rather than the Librarian.

  • Abigail Foreman. Abigail is nice, but costs a buttload of XP and would necessitate Charisma as well. Plus Astral Mirror already gives you more slots (making this aspect of the card overkill), and there isn't really a Tome in this deck where using it an additional time feels crucial (would be nice with the Grim Memoir, though).

Campaign starter and planned progression

With In the Thick of It this is effectively a 30XP deck which is suitable for most campaigns. With your 3 initial XP you can take both Railshooter on your Hyperphysical Shotcaster and Death • XIII. Starter deck is directly below (and link here):

A recommended order of XP purchases/upgrades is as follows:

Further upgrades and side deck

Higher Education I think makes for the best addition if you're flush with XP, and also is probably the most noteworthy contender for the side deck too (replacing Eon Chart •••• with Eon Chart •). Occult Lexicon ••• isn't a bad upgrade, but doesn't feel hugely needed either. Deduction could be used in place of Enraptured, I just like Enraptured a little more. I don't think Encyclopedia is worth upgrading, 5 secrets is a lot and will normally last you a game.

Final thoughts

I thought this deck came together exceptionally well. While it's not as strong at clue compression as you can get with some characters, you can still get 5 clues in a turn and (very importantly) you're not defenceless in combat - making this a great flex example. My previous problems with Daisy were not being able to rely on the Tote Bag for extra slots (and so sometimes having the The Necronomicon displace something crucial), having subpar combat options (Abyssal Tome makes me sad) and taking ages to get assets into play - these issues are all solved with the combo of Astral Mirror and Hyperphysical Shotcaster. I hope you enjoyed it anyway, let me know what you think!
