The core identity of Mark Harrigan is his card inate card draw ability and "Sophie".
The aim of this deck is to supercharge both those abilities by combining multiple synergies:
1) Extra allies & Charisma.
Beat Cops are great and having more is better, even on their own. The extra health however also allows for more uses of both your core identity abilities. Extra allies (Including Brother Xavier) also makes the deck more reliable, and start out with an ally early. Being able to use them more as damage soaks before replacing.
Sophie demands direct damage however, which brings us to:
2) Smoking Pipe & Painkillers.
These are normally not great, but for Mark allow him to siphon the direct damage away to other sources.
They also make it easier to trigger Mark's card draw on turns where he's not fighting.
Example early game: --> Take a damage from Sophie to draw and for example help against a Willpower encounter --> Painkillers: Take 1 horror and heal the 1 damage --> Next turn Smoking Pipe: to heal the horror and take 1 damage again (trigger card draw) And later you can just: Painkillers: Take a horror but place it on an ally. You heal the Sophie direct damage so you can use it more often. While the horror damage can also reliably kill Xavier for 2 instant damage whenever you need it.
3) Ever Vigilant.
On their own I wouldn't put Smoking Pipe and Painkillers in the deck, but Ever Vigilant ties it all together.
The main problem using this strong card is having enough cheap assests in your deck to be able to play 3 in a turn for a fantastic bonus. With cheap painkillers and extra allies that is no longer a problem.
As cherry on top these cards are quite cheap in XP as well. (Xavier & Vigil both being 1) Later on upgrades include Stand Together and First Aid to further strengthen the synergy.
