Disclaimer

  • This deck is designed by a newcomer.
  • Ideas and constructive critiques are more than welcome.
  • This deck is NOT for Rambo-ing yourself in solo mode. I played this deck with Daisy Walker and Wendy Adams, and believe it or not, they compliment each other nicely.
  • Roland Banks is my most favourite investigator. I would keep myself as neutral and objective as possible, but the subjectivity might be coming out considerately.
  • Further development of this deck will depend on the development of these investigators' decks as well. Those decks will be played by my friends. When they have time, they would publish about their decks too.
  • English is not my mother tongue. I apologise for every mistake in this writing.

The Role

Roland Banks in our team is to be the bouncer who bangs, protects, and in the meantime also collects clues after defeating the enemies. It suits his function well as an investigator who belongs to class.

Pros and cons

  1. Pros: Roland Banks is a good fighter with 4 and he is the killing machine in our team so far.

  2. Pros: His and are average, means it is not that bad, but it is not that special, too.

  3. Cons: What I concerned the most is his low sanity level. If I am not careful with this, this guy will be a potato in no time although he is good at standing against damages.

  4. Cons: He does not generate the adequate economy and this is quite troublesome since his assets are quite expensive on the first hand.

  5. Cons: Because his is just average, he is not that intelligent and it means it is quite a gamble when he needs to investigate.

  6. Cons: His is also not above average, and it would be horrifying if he fails some skill tests such as Rotting Remains that relate to this factor.

  7. Cons: Low means he is not meant to run away from the enemies. This is true, but what about a skill test that relates to this matter? A value of two is somehow quite problematic, especially when it results in horror damage.

The Cards

These cards below are drafted based on what I think Roland Banks is good and bad at.

Assets

There are three weapons Assets in this deck and the usage is complimentary with Vicious Blow that would be explained in the Skills section and Evidence! in the section Events cards

  • Knife will help a lot until Roland finds the Machete and his Roland's .38 Special. When Roland has found one of them, use the second to get more damage and bonus value.

  • Machete is a good weapon that stays permanently. It means this weapon will stay at Roland's hand and can be used continuously without thinking of bullets consumed in the action.

  • Roland's .38 Special is the favourite weapon I usually used. This weapon gives bonus and even more when there's clue in the location. It buffs the damage to the enemy as well. However, this weapon has limitation issue: the usage is limited to 4 ammo (the solution will be explained in the Events part).

Complimentary Assets such as allies is really appreciated for Roland Banks in order to soak damage and horror (the latter is the most fearsome cons, though) or even to deal more damage:

  • Elder Sign Amulet is A MUST to invest. It costs only 2 resources to keep insanity at bay.

  • First Aid is good to heal damage and even better when it is used to heal horror, not only for Roland Banks but also for other investigators in needed.

  • Beat Cop is another upgrade that could be considered since this version is better than the other Beat Cop. This ally will help soaking horror and to inflict more damage to the enemy.

  • Guard Dog is another ally that costs less than Beat Cop. It can soak and inflict damage back to the enemy. However, this ally is not really helpful to take horror.

Other Assets are helpful in order to help Roland Banks doing another job besides fighting:

  • Flashlight is self-explanatory. When there's the need for Roland Banks to investigate by himself, the 3 value would be hard if it is not helped by this -2 shroud value.

  • Hyperawareness gives Roland Banks +1 or +1 for every resource spent depends on whether he investigates or getting into other skill tests from the Encounter deck.

  • Physical Training gives another boost for and . The extra is useful to complete skill tests and the boosted is a great help whenever Roland Banks meets Elite Enemies.

Events

These Events cards will help Roland Banks to exploit his high while also accommodating his other weak points.

  • Barricade is good when Roland Banks and other investigators need to heal and take a break while getting surrounded by enemies. Also, while getting the investigator team barricaded, he can throw Dynamite Blast and deals damage to the next room.

  • Dodge is good when Roland Banks could not sweep the enemy in a turn.

  • Dynamite Blast is rather costly, but it deals 3 damages to the enemy. Roland Banks high health points are helpful whenever you need to blow it off in the same room as yours. This does not make Roland Banks invincible, but he might be a Jihadist for two rounds, provided that he still has full health with him. This card is also useful when combined with Barricade.

  • Emergency Cache is also A MUST HAVE for Roland Banks because mostly his cards are so expensive.

  • Evidence! is helpful when investigators would like to get clues without doing against shroud value. As written before, Roland Banks is not that intelligent and therefore this event is essential to help Roland Banks helping others to get more clues and advancing the Act.

  • The limitation of ammo in Roland's .38 Special has been mentioned in the weapon Assets section. In order to accommodate this limitation, Extra Ammunition is really helpful to prolong the usage of the firearm weapon.

  • Working a Hunch is self-explanatory. It helps Roland Banks to gather clues without doing nothing but spending two resources.

Skills

Almost all Skills cards are there to help Roland Banks overcoming his average and value, and his low value.

  • Deduction helps Roland Banks *to get another clue when he is successful in investigating the place. This would help a lot when he is forced to get the clue by doing the skill test.

  • Guts will be valuable for him to give boost 2 in skill test such as Rotting Remains and in the end of the turn to get away from Frozen in Fear.

  • Overpower will help Roland Banks' value that is high already in case it is still considered inadequate to defeat the enemies. It is good to note that several enemies has 4 to get damaged (example: Wizard of the Order).

  • Perception is really essential to help Roland Banks getting through the skill test, especially when something like Obscuring Fog comes out.

The Strategies

  1. Engaged every spawned enemy and defeat enemy one by one. Although his health is considered high, Roland Banks is not as invincible as he is, especially in regards to his horror tolerance.
  • Fight the enemy and defeat it in the place with clues. This is rather important, since place that contains clues will give a boost +3 when Roland Banks is equipped with Roland's .38 Special and because whenever he defeats an enemy in one round, he gets one free clue.

  • Roland Banks is really weak in taking the horror. Therefore, getting the ally Assets out is really appreciated.

  • Whenever the horror level reaches 2, it would be good to heal with First Aid.

  • If there is no weapon Assets in your first hand, DO MULLIGAN. This is really important.

Basic Weakness

Cover Up is annoying and quite harmful when it does not get rid off. It cripples his mental by giving trauma for each clue left on it. However, it still can be helped by other investigators to get rid these clues and send this Weakness card back to hell.

The Drawback

Every deck has its own flaw, and so is mine. The thing that you do not want to encounter while playing with this deck is Grasping Hands without enough resources at hand since this tests the value of Roland Banks that is only 2. I did not prepare anything else except Hyperawareness for this.

I've never run Barricade with Roland, but I think it makes a lot of sense when you're also running healing cards like First Aid. Having Dynamite Blast also let's you take care of that hunter enemy waiting outside your barricaded door, too. Seems like a good call to me in the right situations.

@smoorecruxYap, that's the idea. I forgot to point it out that we can use Dynamite Blast as well while get ourselves protected by the Barricade. I will update it in the deck. Thanks to you.
