- If Hastur (The Tattered King) was the version of Hastur that was defeated, proceed to (→R1).
- If Hastur (The King in Yellow) was the version of Hastur that was defeated, proceed to (→R2).
- If Hastur (Lord of Carcosa) was the version of Hastur that was defeated, proceed to (→R3).

Locations with the Passageway trait are connected to one another.
Objective - Only investigators in the Hidden Library may spend the requisite number of clues, as a group, to advance.

The investigators must decide (choose one):
- This is an important discovery! We should take it with us. (→R1).
- It's just a silly trinket, and it would be wrong to steal from the Historical Society. Leave it behind. (→R2)

St. Barnabé - Back
If you spent clues to advance:
You nearly bump into a tall man, his coat and hat as black as his skin is pale. You remember seeing him through the windows of St. Barnabé Church. His organ playing continues to haunt you…
Spawn the set-aside The Organist enemy at the lead investigator's location, (Draped in Mystery) side face-up. Advance to Act 2a - Pursuing Shadows.
Otherwise:
The organ you heard earlier continues to haunt you. No matter where you are, the torturous chords play over and over in your head. Startled, you ask a passerby about the church. "St. Barnabé?" she replies in a thick accent. "There is no such place."
Each investigator takes 2 horror.
Spawn the set-aside The Organist enemy at the location farthest from all investigators, (Draped in Mystery) side face-up. Advance to Act 2a - Pursuing Shadows.

If you spent clues to advance:

Spawn the set-aside The Organist enemy at the location farthest from all investigators, (Hopeless, I Defied Him) side face-up. Advance to Act 2a - Stalked by Shadows.
Otherwise:
You nearly bump into a tall man, his coat and hat as black as his skin is pale. He gives you a look of hatred, as intense and as deadly as you have ever seen. You recoil at the mere sight of him, and shadows gather around his feet as he marches towards you.
Each investigator takes 2 horror.
Spawn the set-aside The Organist enemy at the lead investigator's location, (Hopeless, I Defied Him) side face-up. Advance to Act 2a - Stalked by Shadows.

Objective - "Tell us how to stop the path from opening!" If The Man in the Pallid Mask is defeated, advance.
Objective - "What is he trying to show us?" Investigators in the Tomb of Shadows may spend the requisite number of clues, as a group, to advance.
Behind the Mask - Back
If The Man in the Pallid Mask was defeated:
The Stranger drops to one knee, visibly wounded. Your knuckles whiten with anger, and you shout, "We know about Carcosa and Hastur. Now tell us how to stop this madness!" The Stranger digs his fingers into the cold stone floor, and the catacombs shake…
Mark two Conviction in your Campaign Log.
Remove The Man in the Pallid Mask from the game.
Advance to Act 3a - The Way Out.
If you spent clues to advance:
Recognizing that the Stranger poses no immediate danger to you, you study your surroundings and the strange shadows twist and distort once more, revealing a strange diagram…
Mark two Doubt in your Campaign Log.
Remove The Man in the Pallid Mask from the game.
Advance to Act 3a - Leading the Way.

Objective - When The Man in the Pallid Mask would be discarded from play, advance.
A City Aflame - Back
Instead of discarding The Man in the Pallid Mask, move him to the Lobby.
Add 2 tokens to the chaos bag.
Place 1 horror on the Theatre. Until the end of the scenario, horror on locations represents spreading flames, and each location with horror gains: "Forced - After you enter this location or end your turn at this location: Test (3). If you fail, take 1 damage. (Limit once per round.)"
Keep this card next to the act deck as a reminder, and advance to act 3a.

The Path is Mine - Back
Instead of discarding The Man in the Pallid Mask, move him to the Lobby.
Add 2 tokens to the chaos bag.
Place 1 horror on the location The Man in the Pallid Mask was moved from. Until the end of the scenario, horror on locations represents the advancing ooze, and each location with horror gains: "Forced - After you leave this location: Test (4). If you fail, take 1 horror and 1 damage."
Keep this card next to the act deck as a reminder, and advance to act 3a.

Objective - When The Man in the Pallid Mask would be discarded from play, advance.
The Shores of Hali - Back
Instead of discarding The Man in the Pallid Mask, move him to the Lobby.
Add 2 tokens to the chaos bag.
Place 1 horror on each Private location. Until the end of the scenario, horror on locations represents flooding water, and each location with horror gains: "Forced - When you would leave this location: Test (2). If you fail, take 1 damage and cancel the effects of the move. (Limit once per round.)"
Keep this card next to the act deck as a reminder, and advance to act 3a.

Forced - At the end of the round, if The Gate to Hell is in play: Discard the location that is farthest from The Gate to Hell. Move each investigator and enemy that was at that location to a connecting location and deal 2 damage to each of them.
Objective - If each undefeated investigator is at The Gate to Hell, advance.

The Stranger's Shadow - Back
Spawn the set-aside The Man in the Pallid Mask weakness in the Tomb of Shadows (instead of its normal spawn location).
Check the Campaign Log. If Ishimaru Haruko is not listed under "VIPs Slain," search the collection for Ishimaru Haruko (Just Skin and Bones) and spawn her at the starting location.


Abbey Church - Back
The path leading to the Abbey Church is blocked. As an additional cost for you to enter the Abbey Church, investigators at Broken Steps must spend 3 clues, as a group.
