Cluever / Flex role for my 4-player multiplayer Return To The Forgotten Age campaign, with lots of xp to spare. This is Charlie's final form. Took a lot of experimentation (and wasted xp) between each scenario, but overall he was a great success!
Pros:
- You are independent and can do anything with this deck; it works in multiplayer and solo just as well.
- You will usually roll very high (9+) = great success rate;
- Lots of damage and horror soak = You are almost invincible with so many allies!
Cons:
- Slow setup, vulnerable during first rounds, but made faster with cards;
- Short Supply increases reliability but can also backfire. Resourceful and Scrounge for Supplies can fix that, but the latter costs actions;
- Can handle enemies with Michael Leigh, but doesn't have a lot of damage to spare for bosses. Galvanize helps a little in an emergency, but that's all.
You begin with a mostly creature-centered deck so you can make the most of your current ally slots. Begin with In the Thick of It so you can play Rod of Animalism until you can switch them with Charisma asap. Then slowly phase out your creatures and bring in the monsters: Michael Leigh, Gené Beauregard and, most importantly, Summoned Hound.
The hounds are your main action economy boosters. The role brings them in safely with A Chance Encounter and Flare, so buy them together. Focus on playing them as soon as possible from your discard pile so you turn into a clue vacuum with the help of your loyal assistant Bonnie Walsh!
After you put the hounds in play, don't be afraid to exile the remaining Flare for expensive cards such as Agency Backup. It's always worth it.
Gregory Gry is your main resource generator. Finally, use Mr. "Rook" to search your deck for your friends. Switch them out with Calling in Favors during the scenario when their usefulness has run out.
Later upgrades:
The Black Cat is situational. If your campaign's token bag doesn't have or tokens, Leo De Luca might be better for mobility and misc. actions. Also, eventually you'll be rolling skills so high these chaos symbols won't even faze you.
Contrary to popular belief, Miss Doyle and her cat army became less and less useful as I gained more xp. Don't be afraid to retire her, since she doesn't contribute much to action economy except for switching out her cats.
As you earn more xp, Anna Kaslow and The Fool • 0 are great resource savers. Mulligan so they are in your starting hand and switch Anna with someone else during the scenario.
Observed grants Charlie some very useful effects, such as an extra ally slot (!!), searching for an ally card on round 1, extra resources, cards and even mulligans.
For healing (mostly your teammates) you can switch out Medical Student for Hallowed Mirror. If you don't need much healing and have the xp to spare, Key of Ys works very well since you almost always can choose where to allocate horror with your gazillion allies, but it might be a little overkill depending on difficulty.
Have fun and don't forget to vote Kane!
