Whatever happens we know this scenario is going to end with Jenny captured and thrown into the Pit of Despair. I’m not saying the designers are going to use that as an excuse to make it meat-grindy, but they certainly could. There’s gonna be cultists and we’ve got minimal offensive capabilities, so about the best we can hope for is that the situation doesn’t spiral out of control. The initial setup feels similar to Echoes of the Past except we can expect Jenny to find the whole tunnel network instead of just one hidden room. There’s no change to the deck save for scenario cards, so without further ado…
Jenny begins the scenario with Thomas Dawson and extra 5 tokens.
Pre-Mulligan Hand: Lone Wolf, Jenny's Twin .45s, "I'm outta here!". Waveworn Idol, Hard Knocks
Opening Hand: Lone Wolf, Waveworn Idol, 2× Lockpicks, Intel Report
Agenda & Act: The Initiation (v. I) & The First Oath
#1
- PLAY Lone Wolf
Thomas Dawson is no replacement for Leo de Luca, but at least we can say that Jenny’s not alone.
- PLAY Waveworn Idol
- PLAY Lockpicks
- Upkeep: draw Intel Report, 6 resources total.
Double Intel Report and double Lockpics add up to an immense clue-finding potential, but at the cost of versatility.
#2
- Mythos: 1/6 doom, Initiate of Dagon (at First Floor Hall)
It’s an incredibly weak enemy, but with five Curse tokens Jenny can’t reliably take her down with just her bare hands. We’ll give our intrepid investigator some time and have her begin by exploring the rest of the first floor.
- Lone Wolf
- MOVE to First Floor Hall (Hall of Blood, red key)
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (0, 1 clue, claim the red key)
Crest. Nothing too specific.
- MOVE to Grand Entryway
- Upkeep: draw Searching for Izzie (at Third Floor Hall), 9 resources total, 1 doom on Initiate of Dagon.
#3
- Mythos: 3/6 doom, Initiate of Dagon (at Foul Corridors)
Doom is accruing. I’ve got no choice, but to have Jenny and Thomas take on the Initiates.
- Lone Wolf
- MOVE to First Floor Hall (Hall of the Deep, partially flooded)
- Waveworn Idol (FIGHT, 0, defeat Initiate of Dagon)
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (, +1, 1 clue)
Excellent! We’re dealing with the problems with minimal delays.
- Hall of the Deep (take Y'ha-nthlei Statue)
This certainly is an excellent alternative to punching 1-health cultists. I’m not sure if and when the scenario expects me to flip it because the multicolored keys are also mentioned on the Act card. Including the red key that I had to spend to get the statue in the first place?
- Upkeep: draw Eureka!, 12 resources total, 1 doom on Initiate of Dagon.
Board State Reminder: 8 health, 7 sanity, 12 resources, 2 clues, 4
In Play: Thomas Dawson, Lockpicks (3 supplies), Waveworn Idol, Y'ha-nthlei Statue, Lone Wolf
In Hand: Lockpicks, 2× Intel Report, Eureka!
#4
- Mythos: 4/6 doom, Wizard of the Order (at Foul Corridors)
Hmmm… That’s less than ideal.
- Lone Wolf
- MOVE to Grand Entryway
- MOVE to Foul Corridors
- FIGHT (-3)
Miss. Thankfully, Jenny has the Y'ha-nthlei Statue to fall back on to deal with the Initiate and an attack by the Wizard has its benefits. Namely, the card from Thomas’s reaction.
- Y'ha-nthlei Statue (defeat Initiate of Dagon)
- Enemy: Wizard of the Order attacks (1 damage to Thomas Dawson, Thomas Dawson, draw Lone Wolf)
- Upkeep: draw Dark Pact, 15 resources total.
One more duplicate and the second weakness. Useless.
#5
- Mythos: 5/6 doom, Stone Barrier
Well, this happened at the exact wrong location. I’ll either have to spend a key, which Jenny hasn’t found yet, or waste several actions on bypassing it.
- Lone Wolf
- Stone Barrier (Wizard of the Order attacks, 1 damage, Thomas Dawson, draw "Watch this!", commit Eureka! & "Watch this!", bid 3 resources, Streetwise, , 6 resources, draw Mauser C96, exhaust Stone Barrier)
There’s not enough actions to capitalize on exhausting the Stone Barrier, but the Mauser is exactly what Jenny needs in this situation. We’ll say that she managed to topple her opponent to the ground and wrestle the gun away from him.
- PLAY Mauser C96 (Wizard of the Order attacks, 1 damage)
- FIGHT with Mauser C96 (4 ammo left, 0, defeat Wizard of the Order, 1 resource)
So glad for that Zero!
- Upkeep: draw Nimble, 17 resources total.
#6
- Mythos: 5/6 doom, Stone Barrier (at Third Floor Hall)
Another. This is unfortunate, because all three second and third floor locations are unrevealed, so I’m not sure whether placing the Stone Barrier there is relevant or not. I’m not too keen on putting the Stone Barrier on another hub location, but given both first floor hall locations were explored it should be the safest bet. On the other hand the Act card references Grand Entryway. Difficult choice.
- Lone Wolf
- Stone Barrier (commit Nimble, Streetwise, , -1, exhaust Stone Barrier, move to Second Floor Hall, Hall of Loyalty, move to Foul Corridors, move to Second Floor Hall, Hall of Rebirth, Apostle of Dagon with black key)
- FIGHT with Mauser C96 (3 ammo left, , 2 damage to Apostle of Dagon, × Apostle of Dagon)
Hit! But it wasn’t enough to ready the Mauser. We’re forced to bare knuckle brawl.
- FIGHT (, -4)
- Enemy: Apostle of Dagon attacks (1 horror to Thomas Dawson, 1 damage, Thomas Dawson, draw Working a Hunch)
- Upkeep: draw Mauser C96, 18 resources total.
Board State Reminder: 5 health, 7 sanity, 18 resources, 2 clues, 5
In Play: Thomas Dawson (1 damage & 1 horror), Mauser C96 (3 ammo), Lockpicks (3 supplies), Waveworn Idol, Lone Wolf
In Hand: Lockpicks, 2× Intel Report, Dark Pact, Lone Wolf, Working a Hunch, Mauser C96
#7
- Mythos: 6/6 doom, advance agenda 1a→2a (Joyce Little with blue key at Third Floor Hall), Secret Gathering (, -2, 1 horror to Thomas Dawson, 1 horror to Waveworn Idol, 1 doom on Apostle of Dagon)
There’s an interesting tidbit of information on the flipside of Agenda 1. Namely, it’s possible for the Third Floor location to be outside play. It suggests that Searching for Izzie might resolve itself, same as in Light in the Fog. Even if it doesn’t, one mental trauma for the last scenario isn’t too drastic.
- Lone Wolf
- FIGHT with Mauser C96 (2 ammo, , defeat Apostle of Dagon, × Apostle of Dagon, 1 resource, claim the black key)
- MOVE to Foul Corridors
- Foul Corridors (unlocked the third floor)
For a bookshop owner Joyce Little has astounding combat prowess. Even with bonuses from both Thomas and Mauser Jenny’s attacking at 6 against her 5. If it weren’t for the blue key I wouldn’t think of trying to defeat her.
- Upkeep: draw Fine Clothes, 22 resources total.
#8
- Mythos: 1/6 doom, Esoteric Ritual (, discard Lockpicks & Lone Wolf)
Jenny hears the ritual from outside. The sounds are muffled by the thick stone slab. In the meantime, I don’t mind getting rid of the duplicates.
- Lone Wolf
- Stone Barrier ( Streetwise, 0, exhaust Stone Barrier)
- MOVE to Hall of Silence (purple key)
- FIGHT with Mauser C96 (1 ammo left, , -2, × Hall of Silence)
Miss. Not unexpected. All right, next round I’ll have Jenny have a hunch and leave Joyce behind.
- Enemy: Joyce Little attacks (1 horror, draw Delilah O'Rourke)
Or will I? Delilah can reliably defeat Joyce, who holds the blue key. That key represents written proof of Order’s activities and secrets.
- Y'ha-nthlei Statue (1 damage to Joyce Little)
- Working a Hunch (1 clue, claim purple key)
- Upkeep: draw Delilah O'Rourke, 21 resources total.
#9
- Mythos: 2/6 doom, Fulfill the Oaths (, , , 0, 1 damage, × Hall of Silence, , , -4, 1 damage, × Hall of Silence)
Heh, for all that notation, I’ve only burned through three curse tokens in this encounter.
- Lone Wolf
- PLAY Delilah O'Rourke (Joyce Little attacks, 1 horror, Thomas Dawson, draw "I'm outta here!")
- EVADE ( Streetwise, , +1, exhaust Joyce Little)
- Y'ha-nthlei Statue (1 damage to Joyce Little)
- Delilah O'Rourke (defeat Joyce Little, claim the blue key)
Done. I’ve got one action to spare inside the Hall of Silence. As much as an extra XP from Intel Reporting would be nice, I’d rather not have to deal with The Price of Failure in the final scenario. Despite the playthrough happening months after release, it’s still a blind run for me.
- PLAY Dark Pact (2 damage to Delilah O'Rourke)
- Upkeep: draw "I'm outta here!", 14 resources total.
More duplicates!
Board State Reminder: 3 health, 5 sanity, 14 resources, 3 clues, 9
In Play: Thomas Dawson (1 damage & 2 horror), Delilah O'Rourke (2 damage), Mauser C96 (1 ammo), Lockpicks (3 supplies), Waveworn Idol (1 horror), Y'ha-nthlei Statue, Lone Wolf
In Hand: 2× Intel Report, Mauser C96, Fine Clothes, Delilah O'Rourke, 2× "I'm outta here!"
#10
- Mythos: 3/6 doom, Priest of Dagon (at Foul Corridors)
- Lone Wolf
- Stone Barrier (commit "I'm outta here!", -2, exhaust Stone Barrier)
- PLAY Intel Report ( 1 clue from Hall of Loyalty)
Here, I could’ve flipped the statue instead. I’m still not sure whether it is integral to the scenario or just an added bonus. Notice, that with so many Curse tokens in the chaos bag, I cannot use the statue to ping the Priest.
- MOVE to Foul Corridors
I’d appreciate it if Leo joined our intrepid team, so I’ll allow him to attack Jenny once. I’ve grown so used to Leo that the baseline three actions per turn seem restrictive.
- Delilah O'Rourke (1 damage to Priest of Dagon)
- Enemy: Priest of Dagon attacks (1 horror to Delilah O'Rourke, 1 damage, Thomas Dawson, draw Jenny's Twin .45s)
- Upkeep: draw Working a Hunch, 10 resources total, 1 doom on Priest of Dagon.
#11
- Mythos: 5/6 doom, Esoteric Ritual (, discard Fine Clothes & Jenny's Twin .45s)
Nothing too important. Honestly, Fine Clothes should’ve been rotated out of this deck several scenarios ago. At this point I’ve got ways to overpower parley tests and I’ve got better damage and horror soaks.
- Lone Wolf
- Delilah O'Rourke (defeat Priest of Dagon)
- Stone Barrier ( Streetwise, , exhaust Stone Barrier)
- MOVE to Grand Entryway
- Grand Entryway
- advance act 1a→2a (The Second Oath, partially flooded)
- Waveworn Idol (MOVE to Tidal Tunnel, Tidal Pool, facedown key)
- Upkeep: draw Easy Mark, 8 resources total.
Oh? We’re nearing the bottom of the deck and that’s the first Easy Mark we’ve seen.
#12
- Mythos: 5/6 doom, Cerenerian Deep One
We’ll say that Waveworn Idol operates on Witcher Medallion rules. It vibrated and forewarned Jenny of the approaching Deep One. It’s thick-skinned, but weak. We’ll say that Jenny set up an ambush to make the best use of her sole remaining bullet.
- Waveworn Idol (FIGHT with Mauser C96, 0 ammo left, +1, 2 damage to Cerenerian Deep One, 1 resource)
- Lone Wolf
- Delilah O'Rourke (defeat Cerenerian Deep One)
Delilah finished the creature off before our turn begun. Awesome! I'm topped off on Curse tokens, so engaging Cerenerian Deep One made no difference in that regard.
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (, 2 supplies left)
Same. Can’t add more than ten Curse tokens to the bag. I have the option to use Teachings of the Order, but I don’t feel I’m under severe pressure in terms of passing tests. No, it’s time that’s the problem. The last Agenda is imminent and I’ve still got seven more Tidal Tunnels to check out.
- INVESTIGATE ( Streetwise, -1, 1 clue, claim the yellow key)
- MOVE to Grand Entryway
- Upkeep: draw Hard Knocks, 8 resources total.
Board State Reminder: 2 health, 5 sanity, 8 resources, 2 clues, 10
In Play: Thomas Dawson (1 damage & 2 horror), Delilah O'Rourke (2 damage & 1 horror), Mauser C96 (0 ammo), Lockpicks (2 supplies), Waveworn Idol (1 horror), Y'ha-nthlei Statue, Lone Wolf
In Hand: Intel Report, Mauser C96, Delilah O'Rourke, "I'm outta here!", Working a Hunch, Easy Mark, Hard Knocks
#13
- Mythos: 6/6 doom, advance agenda 2a→3a (The Ritual Advances), Tidal Alignment (1 damage, fully flooded)
- Waveworn Idol (move to Tidal Tunnel, Doorway to the Depths, green the key)
There are no clues elsewhere on the map. This means I can claim the green key with Working a Hunch and then I’ll have the exact number of clues needed to trigger the Doorway to the Depths.
- Lone Wolf
- Working a Hunch (1 clue, claim green key)
- Doorway to the Depths
- advance act 2a→3a (Dagon at Lair of Dagon, The Third Oath)
- MOVE to Lair of Dagon ()
Perfect! There is no need to backtrack to the unrevealed Tidal Tunnels. In theory, I am able to win this scenario without moving at all, but… If something goes wrong Jenny will drown.
- PLAY Intel Report ( 2 clues)
- Upkeep: draw Easy Mark, 5 resources total.
#14
- Mythos: 1/6 doom, Esoteric Ritual ()
Elder Sign! Dagon is undisturbed. Jenny moves around with utmost care.
- Lone Wolf
- Lair of Dagon (commit Mauser C96 & Hard Knocks, Streetwise, , , 1 resource on Dagon)
OK, that counts as an automatic failure.
- Lair of Dagon ( Streetwise, , , , , spend yellow key, 2 clues total on act)
Ahahaha! We’re at zero resources, but double Streetwise is enough to offset triple Curse tokens! Still, Jenny must withdraw. Her lungs are close to bursting.
- MOVE to Doorway to the Depths
- Upkeep: draw Leo De Luca, 2 resources total.
#15
- Mythos: 2/6 doom, Fulfill the Oaths (, , defeat Delilah O'Rourke, , defeat Thomas Dawson, commit Leo De Luca, Streetwise, -2)
Imagine this happening at Dagon’s location. In any case, Jenny is at one health, but at the same time we’re two tests away from completing the scenario. I’m going to use this round to prepare and the next round to pick the last clue and put in on the Act. I still got "I'm outta here!" if Dagon is roused from his slumber.
- Lone Wolf
- PLAY Easy Mark (draw "Watch this!")
- Easy Mark (draw Hard Knocks)
- PLAY Delilah O'Rourke
- MOVE to Lair of Dagon (+1)
I’m exceedingly lucky when it comes to entering this location.
- Upkeep: draw Nimble, 4 resources total.
Board State Reminder: 1 health, 5 sanity, 4 resources, 0 clues, 5
In Play: Delilah O'Rourke, Mauser C96 (0 ammo), Lockpicks (2 supplies), Waveworn Idol (1 horror), Y'ha-nthlei Statue, Lone Wolf
In Hand: "I'm outta here!", "Watch this!", Hard Knocks, Nimble
#16
- Mythos: 3/6 doom, Mysterious Chanting (Acolyte at Doorway to the Depths)
Irrelevant.
- Lone Wolf
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks ( Streetwise, -3, 1 clue)
- Lair of Dagon (commit Nimble, "Watch this!" & Hard Knocks, -4, 3 clues total on Act)
- R1.
Wooo! I made it through the entire scenario without Leo de Luca.
I flipped the Y'ha-nthlei Statue immediately after finishing the scenario. It turned out it would’ve been even more useful than the Cursed variant. I should’ve done that when I first had the chance. Keeping the blue key until the end of the scenario didn’t matter. Jenny was captured, as we all knew she would be. We’ve circled back to the beginning of the campaign. Perhaps it’s because I’m playing the scenarios months apart, but I feel the stakes for the incoming final scenario aren’t well defined. In theory I know it’s about Esoretic Order of Dagon flooding the Earth, but I don’t exactly remember when Jenny learned that? Or perhaps that was intentional? As for the scenario itself, it was solid, but mediocre. Especially the Tidal Tunnels arrangement felt uninspired, given that we’ve seen the set used better earlier in the campaign. On the positive side, the multitude of cultists in the scenario gave me an opportunity to appreciate Delilah O'Rourke. She was definitely the MVP.
Until next time!
