This is a rouge-ish Wendy Scavenging / Succeed by 2+ build made possible with the advent of Lockpicks; where before Succeeding by 2 or more was a pipe dream for Wendy, Lockpicks renders it almost a forgone conclusion. What we are looking to bring to the table is resiliency; we can juggle/evade enemies with ease (and stand to benefit from Pickpocketing), and can freely commit asset cards from our hand to pass treachery tests or trigger Wendy's (knowing we can scavenge then out). Between commuting our assets to tests and Opportunist(2) we can forgo most of the neutral skill cards.
While this deck will never win the gold in the cluever or monster killer Olympics, we can happily tick away across the board while resisting most of the encounter decks tricks. The deck works in both solo and multiplayer.
Mulligan Guide
Hard mulligan for Scavenging. The only cards I would keep are Lockpicks and maybe Pickpocketing. Everything else is considered merely good to have and not integral to the deck.
Piloting Instructions
Scavenging and its Many Uses
Get Scavenging and Lockpicks on the board and start investigating; use Lantern and Flashlight in its place until you have Lockpicks. Then, start investigating; use Scrapper if you need additional . Once you have it, commit Opportunist(2) to pad your odds of succeeding by 2 or more to whatever tests call for it.
Our main targets for Scavenging are Rabbit's Foot, Wendy Adams, and Elder Sign Amulet. Use them to resist treacheries of help others pass their own tests. Avoid equiping them, though sometimes it may be necesssry for their specific effect. Fine Clothes is also a good target; we can essentially use it as a semi-permanent 1/1 health/sanity buffer.
Lantern and Gravedigger's Shovel can of course be used for their icons or discard .
Any item is a valid discard for Wendy's , especially when facing an ill timed !
Investigating
Lantern, Flashlight, and Lockpicks will all obviously be used to nab clues and trigger Scavenging. If you run into a high shroud location that's too risky to investigate, use Gravedigger's Shovel . If you need to accelerate your cluevering, use Double or Nothing + Quick Thinking. Try to save Double or Nothing for enemies with XP (see next section).
Enemy Management
We for the most part just want to juggle/evade enemies to benefit from Pickpocketing, or its upcoming upgrade. The only enemies we want to kill either (a) have XP, or (b) are incredibly pesky. Our main method of killing XP enemies is Backstab + Double or Nothing; in solo this is often sufficient to 1 shot an enemy. For others, we can take a wack with Gravedigger's Shovel or discard Lantern. Switchblade(2) is an option if you want more consistent damage output or a way to "drop" an item and pick it up via Scavenging.
Between Emergency Cache, Lone Wolf, and Pickpocketing(2) we will accumulate a healthy pile of resources. Use then accordingly with Scrapper to boost and as needed.
Upgrade Recommendations
I recommend the following upgrade path:
-
Flashlight x2 or Lantern x2 Lockpicks(1) x2 (2xp)
-
Pickpocketing x2 Pickpocketing(2) x2 (4xp)*
-
Unexpected Courage x2 Opportunist(2) x2 (4xp)
-
Peter Sylvestre x2 Peter Sylvestre(2) x2 (4xp)
-
Rabbit's Foot x2 Elder Sign Amulet(3) x2 (6xp)
-
Gravedigger's Shovel x1 Switchblade(2) x1 (2xp)
-
Sneak Attack x1 Switchblade(2) x1 (2xp)
-
Daring Maneuver Lucky Dice(2) (4xp)
- Emergency Cache x2 Emergency Cache(2) x2 (4xp)
Somewhere along the way pick up Scrapper(3) (3xp).
*Presently unreleased, but the deck functions quite well without it.
The upgrades are fairly straightforward and designed to make scavenging easier or better. As for Flashlight vs Lantern and which to cull, generally I recommend to stick with Lantern for solo and easy/standard games, Flashlight for multiplayer and hard/expert games.
Alternatives and Conflicts
Base Deck
In multiplayer games, consider dropping Lone Wolf; if your job is tanking, evading, and supporting you're probably not going to be able to use it all that often. Add extra copies of Daring Maneuver or Sneak Attack instead.
If you want another Daring Maneuver drop Sneak Attack (and vice versa)
Upgrades
You may optionally add Leo De Luca(1) and Charisma instead of a Switchblade(2) for better action economy. Otherwise Peter Sylvestre(2) is too good for this deck.
If Peter Sylvestre is taken by another player, upgrade to Cat Burglar(1).

Oct 05, 2017Great write-up, Motux, really like it. Really surprised Cat Burglar only features right at the end. I'm such a burglar aficionado and particularly with how you emphasise the importance of Lockpicks in this build, cat burglar really feeds into that. Its ability also provides additional flexibility for those times when you've cleared a location and just want to move on, rather than passing an evade check. I agree, there's a lot of competition from Leo De Luca and Peter Sylvestre but the burglar, in Wendy, pips them for me every time! |
Oct 05, 2017How about Aquinnah 2 once you got Peter Sylvestre 2 and Charisma? Use the witch to reflect attacks while doing something else and dump horror on Peter Sylvestre. I'm also wondering why you're not recommending Will to Survive? I could understand if you played Dark Horse and are ressource starved, but you said yourself you'll have some ressources left. You could even recover it with Resourceful and play it 4 times. Or lucky... wait you're not playing Lucky! 1 or Lucky! 2? |

Yes, I am not using Lucky; we are focused on succeeding by 2 or more, not failing, and we will succeed more often than not especially once we have Lockpicks and Scrapper going. It's a great card for sure, but it doesn't compliment what the deck is trying to do. Wendy's reaction and Lucky Dice are superior in this deck. I may revise my nova-turn Wendy deck that does use these cards, but this is a vastly different deck. |

Oct 06, 2017Well... While Peter Sylvestre is indeed awesome, I'd still want to use Leo De Luca over him. |

Hello Motux! Interesting build you assembled there! When you play this solo, would you suggest to win the last scenario in Night of the Zealot with clue gathering or feeding Lita to the Ancient God? I am a bit sceptical, because the encounter deck advances rapidly in this scenario.
