Parallel Jim is very different from other investigators because he uses curses and talks to spirits. Well, I know a couple of spells that use curses to do stuff!
We play Innsmouth, and we have a Parallel Zoey, a Monterey, and a Kouhaku with us. At first, everyone was afraid of curses; by the second scenario, a bag full of curses was actually making people feel good! The way things work is that Jim is tapping Rod of Carnamagos to reveal tokens before the revelation of tokens for his cursed spells, Eye of Chaos (4) and Armageddon (4). For each they do useful stuff - and do not affect the outcome of the spell! With Olive McBride, you can draw 7 tokens, two of which are more likely to be curses than others. Kouhaku sometimes helps to reveal a but that requires having more curses than blesses in the bag.
I intend to take Spirit of Humanity for fast healing/adding curses and maybe a Binder's Jar to hold a couple of especially annoying enemies (Deep One Bull looking at you buddy). Among cards I took at the beginning, Voice of Ra with Olive's help gave me 7 resources once, and 5 more than once; Ritual Candles make pretty much any symbol token inconsequential. Living Ink is not terrible but maybe a Tarot would work better. Diabolical Luck was great when I drew too many curses. Control Variable never went unused.
My spirits deck is Alyssa Graham, Beat Cop (soon to be upgraded to Summoned Hound), Jeremiah Kirby, Medical Student, Leo De Luca, Laboratory Assistant, Granny Orne (maybe will upgrade to pass tests that I fail by 1), Mysterious Raven, Stray Cat. Contemplating adding a Charisma and Nkosi Mabati later, but not sure what to drop for Nkosi.
As soon as you get your upgraded Rod and your upgraded Spells, you dominate the mythos. You need friends to deal with Vengeful Shade if it pops out of your spirits deck on turn 1, and you need some actions to draw your spells - I am thinking about getting Word of Command instead of the second copy of my curse spells, but for Indebted Jim that might be prohibitively expensive.
Anyway, try Parallel Jim, he's loads of fun, and not too finicky. Don't forget to draw a spirit, and don't forget to use them!
